A Most Valuable Gift from God. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick—one of the seven signs instituted by Christ to effect the grace they signify (see the Code of Canon Law, 840)—is usually referred to when one requires it or one’s family member requests it. The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers a useful presentation of this Sacrament. In numbers 1499 through 1532, one discovers the Church’s teaching pertaining to the Anointing of the Sick, which is one of the “Sacraments of Healing.” The Sacrament’s meaning, history of institution, recipient, minister, celebration and effects are discussed, along with a description of Viaticum—“The Last Sacrament of the Christian.” The Catechism asserts “that Penance (Confession), the Anointing of the Sick and the Eucharist as Viaticum constitute at the end of Christian life ‘the Sacraments that prepare for our heavenly homeland’ or the Sacraments that complete the earthly pilgrimage.” (1525) Canon 1004, §1 of the Code of Canon Law states: “The Anointing of the Sick can be administered to a member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.”Know of our prayers on the death of loved ones!

The Custom of Mass Intentions. A traditional practice among Catholics is the submitting of an intention to a priest so that he may apply the Mass for that specific intention. The Code of Canon Law, which is a collection of many of the Church’s regulations, addresses Mass Intentions. Priests are to celebrate Mass for the intention presented by one who asks, even if that person does not make an offering of money. The Faithful who give an offering to apply the Mass for their intention contribute to the good of the Church and by that offering share in her concern to support her priests and works.
The Provincial Council of the Bishops of the Province (in our case, Minnesota and the two Dakotas) define by decree for the entire Province the offering to be given for the celebration and application of Mass. In our Province, the normal offering is $10.00. A priest is not permitted to accept more offerings for Masses than he can satisfy within a year. Every priest must note accurately the Masses which he accepted to celebrate and those which he has satisfied.
